We developed proposals for a new infill development of affordable housing, on an existing Peabody estate. A simple basic form in brick was sculpted and cut away, revealing a layered structure of different brick skins that enlivens the facade. A combination of carved-out and projecting balconies brings rhythm to the facade while also enriching the side elevations, and is purposeful in terms of the functionality and privacy of this amenity space.
The block is set back slightly from the pathway to avoid overpowering the street, and is integrated into the surrounding landscaping and playspace. It has a generous entrance foyer that has light and views at both ends. Maisonettes have private yards/gardens at the rear, buffering the building from the neighbouring ball-court.
