Building Hungry House

Designing and constructing Hungry House was a fantastic experience and one that also taught us a lot.

Part-demolishing and adapting the existing building, we discovered a previously unknown timber frame buried within the brick, and other fascinating evidence of how it was constructed and changed over the previous 300 years or more. Building new timber-frame, brick-clad volumes using wholly breathable yet airtight construction, presented new challenges.

Being on site ourselves daily, working alongside our directly employed trades, ensured that we could make adaptations as we went along but also ensure that attention to detail and strict quality control were possible. This meant almost nothing needed to be done more than once, saving time and money.
