Cottage Farm

We were commissioned to make a new extension to a historic house in Suffolk, with the brief of creating a celebratory 'mead hall' for the extended family of up to 30 to cook and eat.

A simple, airy space with a dramatic rooflight, the 'hall' has a warm materiality of timber framing and fins to the roof lantern, while externally it adds discreetly to the existing composition of extensions to the back of the house. A new timber framed conservatory/porch improves the most-used entrance to the house, adapting it from an ad-hoc side door into a considered sequence with character and presence.
