Felixstowe Seafront Development Strategy

We were commissioned by East Suffolk Council in 2024 to develop a public realm strategy and initial proposals for key spaces along the south seafront of Felixstowe. The area includes a number of important heritage and natural assets - a Martello Tower, an SSSI, and the Landguard Fort, as well as a Conservation Area designated for its attractive Edwardian seaside architecture and gardens. We were charged with revitalising the use of the public realm including under-used green spaces, formal gardens that had become neglected, play areas and streets, with the aim of encouraging visitors to dwell longer, reducing congestion along the seafront, and improving accessibility.

Projects included the reorganisation of seafront parking and traffic to partially pedestrianise some areas, widen pavements and improve accessibility from town to seafront. New lighting for the promenade has been designed, and a wayfinding signage strategy will be implemented, reducing street clutter and encouraging visitors to explore the full three-mile length of the seafront. The proposals were developed in consultation with Historic England, the Environment Agency and the local highways authority, as well as through engagement with the local community and businesses.

The Strategy was formally adopted in 2025 and we are now assisting ESC with the next steps of delivery for priority projects.
