Jaywick Sands workspace and public realm

We are currently delivering a major regeneration scheme for Tendring District Council on the seafront in Jaywick Sands, having previously been commissioned to undertake a feasibility and business case for the project. In one of the most unique and challenging communities in the UK, the project will create affordable business space, ranging from shopfront kiosks to office and light industrial units, indoor and outdoor market space, training room, cafe, public WCs and extensive public realm improvements including space for outdoor events and an ecologically rich community garden.

The project aims to generate a full range of community benefits, from access to affordable fresh food and local services which are not currently found in the community, to employment and training opportunities. On a central seafront site, it is an important part of the ongoing regeneration of Jaywick Sands which aims to reverse years of deprivation and under-investment, and forms part of a wider programme of work including the Jaywick Sands Place Plan and Design Code.

HAT undertook extensive research through community networks as well as local agents, to understand the level of demand for commercial space in the area, the type of space required, and the needs of local small-scale businesses, sole traders and potential entrepreneurs in the community, authoring the full business case and economic impact assessment in 2020 for the successful application for capital funding for the project for £2m through SELEP and the Getting Building Fund.

The project is currently on site and will be completed in 2023.
