Victoria & Albert Museum Secretariat

We have created an elegant new reception for the V&A's Secretariat Wing in a small but complex project. Part of the Grade 1 listed estate, the Secretariat previously presented a cramped and underwhelming impression to the curators, partners and funders who visit for meetings, as well as for staff and everyday visitors.

The new space has gently vaulted ceilings to create the impression of height, and a curve of bespoke veneered cupboards, with careful lighting and restoration of historic stone and fibrous plasterwork. Creating a large new structural opening under one of the main galleries involved detailed work to ensure the listed fabric was protected, and all the work was undertaken while the existing reception remained open throughout. The project was completed without a hitch, on time and budget, and has transformed this area of the Museum into a beautifully crafted welcome.

HAT worked wonders in a constrained site, creating a space that visitors and staff alike have praised. The project ran without a hitch, while the reception remained operational throughout, and we’re delighted with the result.
